How much training should be done in a nuzlocke run?

I feel like it kinda beats the point of nuzlocke if you always train them up to a decent level, considering the games aren't that difficult as long as you know weaknesses and etc.
But when I try Platinum nuzlocke without any training it can get tough really fast (looking at you, lv17 Purugly). I do enjoy the challenge, but it's a bit much, I don't know.
What's your opinion?

tl;dr I like nuzlocke without training, but it gets me killed easily in Platinum, what do

As much as you need. If you're breezing through, no problem. If there's a level spike ahead, train to meet it.
Alternately, git gud.

In order to git gud I tend to keep some def/sp.def raising moves in my mons so they can survive in the big battles.
It's just annoying sometimes losing more than half my team to crits from the same pokemon.
