I named my Jynx Nikki after a character, and I didn't realize until later that lietrally everybody names Jynx that after the singer.

This is just a friend thing, but one weekend my friends and I went to a cabin for a week and did Ruby version randomizers. My stoner friend named his Charmander gnjanfrno (ganja inferno, but character limit). We thought it was great, then one friend made all of his Pokemon that and the joke died.

I never nickname on a first playthrough since I want to learn the names. When I replay though, I pick a theme and go with it. I've done fruit all around the world (I'm a botanist irl) or I've done dishes I wanted to try, I've done countries, what their real life animal/source was, etc. I see a ton of food-pun names for sure, but I have no shame.
