Encountering Pokemon doesn't seem to include battles, but rather works around an aiming mechanic where you actually have to hit the Pokemon with a Pokeball.

all of the cube things seem to match up with ingress portals so they are not pokemon go's ingress xm equivalent.
the trainer is standing on don chee way looking towards howard street.
actually the trainer is inside the san fransisco railway museum. the ivysaur appeared over the hotel next door.
the other cube icons are definitely ingress portals. the battle background is probably the default battle background for an urban area.
the battle background is exactly the same as the front of niantic hq in street view
that squirtle to the right behind the portal icon must be the trainers because its not listed in the "nearby" pokemon on the bottom right
this is just a catching demonstration, the bulbasaur does an attack animation right before the master ball is thrown. it was probably attacking the trainer's squirtle that is just off screen.

I have a few questions.
If they were giving this presentation and people were allowed to record the footage shown, why on earth didn't they upload it on an official channel? Did they really not expect anyone to upload the very first footage of an anticipated game to Youtube?
Why does it look so awful? I mean, it obviously wasn't going to look like it did in the trailer, and I can understand that AR technology isn't perfect, but this looks unfinished and unpolished as hell for something they've worked years on. This looks like some cheap knock-off app someone made in 5 minutes. The textures are pretty much just solid color.
I'm hoping that they don't just have every pokemon stand in place and stare at you in order for you to catch it. Also, there's got to be battle mechanics, they had them obviously battling that Mewtwo and there's definitely trainer battles. I can only assume that either this is the starter pokemon (although it's an ivysaur and he used a fucking master ball), or they STILL haven't implemented a battle system at all.
