I guess his design was alright in previous gens, but his XY model really showed how bland his desing really is. So bland that he's forgettable. Meganium and Feraligatr look so distinct from their prevos, but Typholsion lacks any defining features from Quilava besides "it gets bigger". They could have at least made his ears long, or fire going down his entire back. SOMETHING that says, "This is my final form. Don't fuck with me.". His design is just so passive and non-threatening, especially for a fire starter final evo. Say what you will about Emboar, but his desing alone says "don't FUCK with me".
Typholision just looks likeI(in XY at least) a pokemon you'd encounter excessively in a cave , simiarly to Numel.
In short, he's bland compared to the other GenII final evos, fucking Tododile looks tougher.

No. Typhlosion is just Quilava standing up, and both are shown to switch between going on their hind legs and going on all fours anyway.

I'll admit I've been too harsh on the guy. What bothers me is that he doesn't have much of a theme visually or mechanically. Nothing really sets him apart.
Looking "badass" was never good enough.
At least Feraligatr has the jaw theme and learns thirty moves pertaining to biting. And while meganium's flower deal is just bulbasaur 2, it at least set from most gen I grass by being monotype. And its move pool is pretty unique, despite it sadly being completely useless in competitive situations.
Everyone complains about XY somehow ruining it, even though Typhlosion has NEVER had its flames out except when it's attacking in 3D games.

My Hotshot was by far my favorite pokemon ever. I had him so built by 70 that he was doing solo runs of the E4. So many joyous hours of exploring with him. I was devastated when I couldn't transfer him from G2 into G3 :(
