They are mythological creatures that have characteristics of multiple animals.
Suicune is the Qilin, which has elements of leopards and wolves, as well as having antlers (explaining Suicune's crest).
Entei is a shi, the Chinese guardian beast that has elements of dogs and lions.
Raikou is the Raijin, which had elements of wolves and tigers.
It's so painfully obvious they're mythical beasts. Calling them 'cats' or 'dogs' makes you sound like a six year old kid who can't tell the difference between animals.

Azelf has good offenses and speed going for it and was a great lead in gen4 OU, Mesprit at least has bulk and decent offenses but middling speed, and Uxie can't even touch its opponent.

Terrakion has been a king of OU and VGC in at least 1 format each, Keldeo just has OU to its name, Virizion is just VGC, and Cobalion is overshadowed by Lucario.

Thundurus is easily the most annoying thing to play against dropping the chances of your non-ground type of doing anything down to about 1/8, Landorus has Sheer Force for maximum fuckery, and Tornadus is really only good in OU and even then it's the Therian forme.
