Playing through Pokemon Red, I fought this trainer and right after the fight my Pikachu evolved. He didn't even level up, no thunderstone, nothing. Just after the battle, "Pikachu is evolving" and I just watched in awe. I'll note I haven't done the Mew glitch or anything like that. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
Was a Growlithe in your party?

That must have been nuts, especially without info of the glitch at the time.

Growlithe and Thunderstone share the same in-game value, so having Pikachu gain a level and then switching out to Growlithe confuses the game into thinking Pikachu met the requirements for evolution.
The same thing applies to Exeggutor/Moon Stone, Psyduck/Leaf Stone, and Onix/Water Stone.
