It really wasn't. Some of the pokes were great, but all gens are like that. Gen 1 had pkenty of flaws though (especially if we are talking games) which prevent it from being the best.
There is no undisputed best gen, although newer gens tend to be more polished with better mechanics.

Change U to Umbreon, nobody likes Unown
Change F to Frogadier so you don't have 2 eevees on the list
Change I to Inkay because Igglybuff is ugly
Change V to Victini, how could you not use the guy with the giant "V" on his head?
Change X to Xerneas, literally the mascot f Pokémon X
Quagsire and Wobbuffet look too similar next to each other like that. Replace wob with Whimsicott
Lastly, J-P is all gen-1. I'd break that up a little bit. Maybe change L to Liepard and N to Ninjask or Numel or something, like I said, just to break it up a little bit. A-E is also all gen-1, so maybe change Dugtrio to Doublade or Dialga since you have zero Steel types on this list.
