I always called it Poke-E-Mon like how you Say Chuck-E-Cheese and only recently did I realize it's because of this damn talking cat.
Even with different voice actors and in movies he pronounced it Po-key-mon and he had the most annunciated voice of all the main characters so it rubbed off on me in childhood and you know how early memory imprintation can be

Meanwhile, in Japan, most things are pronounced as they look. A is 'Ah', I is 'ee', U is 'oo', E is 'eh', and O is 'Oh'.
