Used one in my first Emerald playthrough & he was okay - the defences weren't too big a deal because Hoenn didn't have much competition in the bulk department anyhow. I prefer the design to 'champ/'durr but it's completely outclassed in usability by them

If you're talking about being rivals or peers, it's because he never was a proper counterpart to the two. Aside from the obvious lack of evolutionary stages, its last stage is not reached by trade. Its BST is also off. 474 is a significant drop from the 505 of Machamp and Conkeldurr.
Utility and viability wise, it doesn't have much to offer to compensate for its lack of power and proper defenses (monstrous HP, yes, but it's dragged down by horrible defenses). Even stick figures Blaziken and Infernape have higher defenses. Basically, it couldn't pull off the balance of offensive presence and decent staying power Machamp and Conkeldurr have.

Not necessarily. Machamp could fit into a hybrid offensive/supportive role, which it performs better with Quick Guard, faster Wide Guard and "soft-check" by virtue of confusion from Dynamic Punch. But yes, if we are talking pure offensive presence especially with Guts, then undoubtedly, you are correct.

He's bulkier than people give him credit for if you invest directly in his defense since he already has more than enough HP. Assault vest combined with thick fat can take a surprising amount of abuse on the special side. he's no wall but he can tank a hit and fire back a motherfucker of a close combat in return, which is all you need to deal with most sweepers.
