To be totally fair I'd say only 20% of all Pokemon are actually clever ideas. The rest are just objects/animals converted into creatures, usually with some sort of quirk to make them unique from each other. There are tons of good Pokemon that I wouldn't praise from a conceptual point of view, they're just good Pokemon. Pidgey isn't really a good "idea", it's a bird. Same as all the other birds. Voltorb is a fine Pokemon but pretty stupid in terms of idea because the entire idea behind the design is that you confuse it for a Pokeball, which we know is impossible because Voltorb is over a foot tall, or we confuse it for the literal "item on the ground" sprite, which also makes no sense because that's just a visual aid. The items aren't actually in Pokeballs on the ground.
Again, it's a fine Pokemon, it's just a really dumb idea. If Voltorb was part of Gen 6 instead of Gen 1 it'd be a laughing stock on par with the Ice Cream Pokemon and the Garbage Pokemon.
So I think it's less about ideas and more about people just being particularly hung up on designs that utilize stupid ideas, combined with the cynicism that comes with being a long-term fan of something. It's really easy to be critical of something you've put a lot of time into.

As for Kingklang & Vanilluxe, I feel that both lines would be much more acceptable if they were just two-stages. Gen 5 seemed to have a problem with stretching concepts out past their welcome (see genies)

A lot don't translate well literally anywhere but Japan because they are obscure to the rest of the world like klefki which just looks like a keychain to everyone who isn't a weebo.
