Working on a rom hack for Pokemon Crystal

I'm having trouble editing the fishing encounters.
Using a hex editor, but I can't seem to change which pokemon you encounter with each rod.

Crystal with all 251 available
Fixed the leveling throughout both regions, but it also means there's a set path through Johto and Kanto, more of a challenge, added mons to gym leaders, more variety in picking your team, updated moves and movesets for pokemon, and adjusted the stats of some pokemon to make them more viable

I've always wanted to see a version of RBGY / FRLG where you level through Kanto and E4 normally, then move on to the Johto region set 2 years before GSC/HGSS.

Just an idea.

seriously, don't touch stats. and if you will then at least provide a vanilla unedited-stats version
>>
>>25596341
The rods all use one encounter table. I think the first five Pokemon are Old Rod, next three are Good Rod and last two are Super Rod. Something like that, anyway.
>>
>>25596480

That's what I really wanted out of the remakes. Sevii Islands were alright, but there just wasn't enough to do.
>>
>>25598131
The issue is trying to find the specific pokemon hex, then replacing them with the right ones

And the tables differ for different areas. Like you aren't able to Good Rod a Chinchou in Lake of Rage
>>
>>25599028
How necessary is it you edit the wild data for fishing? Could you just make them surf encounters? Or does this have to do with the leveling?

>>25596341
Is there a reason you aren't using the disassembly? It's miles easier to edit, especially for things like this where it's all in tables.

As for the hack I've been working on, we haven't had an /heg/ so I still don't know if the anon who requested it knows it's done, but I finally finished Mt. Coronet's 8-bit cover a few weeks ago.
https://soundcloud.com/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm-1/mt-cornonet-gbc-8-bit-final-version

There was also an anon on /heg/ who wanted to hear Unova Route 2 in 8-bit, so I ended up doing that. Finished it in a day, not sure if it's because the track is simple or if I just felt really elated doing music that wasn't Mt. Coronet.
https://soundcloud.com/mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm-1/unova-route-2-gbc-8-bit

Currently hit a snag where I'm getting a compiling error that I don't know the cause of. I have a backup in case it ends up being unfixable but hopefully I'll correct it without doing so since the backup was made less recently than it should have been.
>>
>>25601533
What is disassembly?
Is it too late to start now?
>>
>>25596408

Really? And it's exactly like mine in every single way so I don't need to do any of the work because he knew just what I wanted to put in it?
Custom sprites and all?
I had absolutely no idea that anyone else has ever made a Pokemon Crystal rom hack.

Please, I would love a link, "family"

Depends on how far you are and what you consider "too late" in regards to starting over, I suppose. Any code you made would have to be redone, but it's nearly guaranteed to be easier to do with the disassembly. How much have you done in the hack?

Hi. I'm glad you're glad to see me but it ruins the point of anonymity when you go this blatant. I haven't tried reviving /heg/ since the board's been going pretty fast and there hasn't really been anything major enough with hacking recently to warrant a general, the odd thread about hacks is good enough.

I personally don't want to make a forum post about the hack I want to make until I actually have progress in it worth showcasing, as opposed to the occasional music piece.

Speaking of which, anyone have any later-Gen Pokémon tunes you want to hear in Gen 2 style? Can't guarantee I'd do them since I don't want another Mt. Coronet monstrosity that takes me months, but I haven't decided what song I want to do next. Preferably no Sinnoh just because there's another guy who wants to cover all the Sinnoh tracks himself, I don't want to go too redundant.

It was perfect until this.

I hope you make a patch without this part as well.
>>
>>25601533
too bad building the game is a bitch on Windows
>>
>>25603130
I write it out by hand, which isn't nearly as painful as I'm sure it sounds. Recently I started ripping the MIDIs from the games themselves, not to import into the ROM (there's a tool for that but I never bothered figuring out how to work it, I like the way I do things well enough) but to look at it in an editor and make sure I get the pitches right without having to listen to a quiet section of a song over and over (thanks Oreburgh Gate with your echo-y background for starting this trend).

>>25603362
It's not that hard, the initial installation is more painful than it used to be because they got rid of some things in the cygwin installation that have to be added manually, but after you get that done it's as simple as cloning the git and typing "make."

>>25603086
>>25603099
Good suggestions, I'll try these. Not touching Lysandre though, sorry, last time I tried doing an XY battle theme it ended up really awful, I don't think the composition style suits 8-bit. I know Bulbamike did a good Lysandre cover in NES style but he's a lot better at this thing than I am.
>>
>>25603408
I've tried using this many times
It's filled with errors, and there are no tutorials online to help
The installation process has no details. It'll say only install a few packages (make git python gettext) but there are about 50 of each to choose from in the installer
>>
>>25603435
Which ones are you having trouble installing? It's been a while since I did it but I remember there were a couple that were named slightly different than the instructions said.
>>
>>25603443
gcc, libsas12, ca-certificates
>>
>>25603443
>>25603483
Also a "curl" package
>>
>>25603435
>>25603483
https://github.com/pret/pokecrystal/blob/master/INSTALL.md#windows

the instructions are slowly shrinking. once rgbgfx is part of rgbds, python won't be necessary either.
>>
>>25603483
gcc was gcc-core, I remember that, but the current install instructions make it look unnecessary now. libsas12 was correctly changed to libsasl2-3, and I found ca-certificates just by searching it.

Just to make sure, you're using the 32-bit version of cygwin, right? The 64-bit version doesn't work as well, it's missing a lot of packages.
>>
>>25603590
No I have a 64 bit
>>
>>25603604
That might explain your issues, I made that mistake and couldn't find the packets I needed. Try installing 32-bit.
>>
>>25603590
>>25603604
>>25603619
64-bit is fine now. it's 32 that's out of date

>>
>>25603631
>>25603619
Okay I think I've gotten this working.
What do you do after "In the Cygwin terminal:

git clone --recursive https://github.com/pret/pokecrystal
cd pokecrystal"

and "To build pokecrystal.gbc:

make"

I don't understand what happened
>>
>>25603408
That's really neato anon.

I use famitracker myself: https://soundcloud.com/ruud-van-eijk-2/pokemon-a-whole-new-world-gsc-style
>>
>>25603701
somewhere there should be a pokecrystal folder with the disassembly.

make whatever changes you want, then in Cygwin, make pokecrystal your target and enter "make"
>>
>>25603701
make is what you use to build the file. If you can successfully build the ROM you have everything installed.
>>
>>25603762
run "explorer ." in cygwin to see the folder youre in
>>
>>25603408
Added PokeFlute to the game, seems to be working, but it crashes after

Any ideas why?
>>
>>25596480
I'm working on that, but >>25596857
might think the setting (5 years after the great pokemon war) is too edgy for his taste.
Regardless, by the time it's done you should be able to go from Pallet to Mt. Silver and uncover the history of Kanto, Johto, and Indigo Plateau and how the Elite Four came to power and all that good stuff.
>>
>>25603989
Well I think I'd need more details, also I'm not at all the best person to ask these things since I still haven't unfucked my game.
>>
>>25602661
I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple of similar Crystal hacks-Complex Crystal does an assload of stat edits and other changes at the cost of stupid difficulty.
>>
>>25604031
It's a key item, can't be held or tossed.
You can use it without any sleeping pokemon and the normal "Now that's a catchy tune." text will display, but then the game resets itself.
>>
>>25604066
Well it sounds like the error has to do with whatever comes after that text. What's the intended effect, is it just meant to end the effect of the item and go back to normal gameplay when there's no sleeping Pokémon around?
>>
>>25604087
Correct, it should go back to normal game play after it's used.

It already has functionality, it was just never added to the game. The scripting is already there found in "item_effects.asm"

Hack thread? Hack thread!
What does /vp/'s /heg/ scene think about this map so far? Been working on it all afternoon. It's part of a series of caverns branching out from Mt. Moon to type/habitat/etc themed pokemon and trainers. There's a lost world of fossil pokemon, a witchwood (the unfinished forest pictured here), a series of caves populated by fire/steel/rock types and blacksmiths, and the lower slope here which will have birds and foresty mountain pokemon. Want to make the waterfall drop next to nugget bridge.
Any experienced mappers care to give some pointers?
>>
>>25604259
a lot of unused space here, add some rocks, random trees, flowers

also, what's the starting point of your waterfall? it just appears from nowhere, what's the source?

very bland

why are all of the trees in a perfect line around cliff ledges?

that's a very very skinny short cave you have there
>>
>>25604087
Fixed it, it wasn't using the right attribute
Now it's just a matter of making an npc who will give you the flute
>>
>>25604307
Thanks
>a lot of unused space here, add some rocks, random trees, flowers
Definitely working on that
>also, what's the starting point of your waterfall? it just appears from nowhere, what's the source?
I figured the small pool was the source, but I am now thinking that I need to put a lake in the Witchwood (that forest inlet)-rivers and streams do run underground, after all.
Another thing is that there are a lot of water fountains in Mt. Moon, and I'm envisioning it as Fairy Central-and Marill's line is part fairy. So my logic is that there is some water source inside of Mount Moon-or at least, an annual water source from snowmelt.
>why are all of the trees in a perfect line around cliff ledges?
Partly because I need to fill the space, partly because there's not much space period. Narrow mountain paths-perhaps I should use the sandy ground or muddy ground tile on these parts.
>that's a very very skinny short cave you have there
That's because it's the end of a series of ladder passageways (like Navel Rock) from the bottom of Mt. Moon. The purpose of that cave is to get to the forest. You would come down from a ladder, exit the cave, and walk on over to the forest.
The forest and the way up to it won't be accessible in the showcase demo, but I wanted to add some sort of new map other than the two I have so far to show off and the lower half is an excellent way to do that imo.

>>
>>25605053
>>25605074

>>
>>25605074
Yes, people have done it. I think there's some kind of flag regarding Kurt about whether you got the GS Ball via event, and just having it in your inventory isn't enough. You probably just need to delete that check, but I'm not sure how to go about such since I've done minimal scripting.
