I had a 2DS, and enjoyed X/Y fine on it, but upon S&M's announcement, I went straight to get a N3DS.
Now to be fair, I was considering upgrading for a while. 2DS is fairly scratch resistant, but there's still more satisfaction in being able to actually close your DS.
I treated myself to buying a few Pikachu Themes, and a Pikachu Cover Plate.
My reason is mainly because I sink a lot of time into Pokémon, and nothing else. Nothing comes close. I know, for an absolute fact I will be sinking a lot of time into Sun.
In fact, I've been replaying all the Pokémon games in hype, so yeah.
If you spend hundreds of hours on Pokémon, especially at the launch of a new Gen, then yes, buy it, you'll enjoy it.
PLUS, the stronger hardware of the N3DS systems may run S&M better. Gen 6 suffered frame rate problems on the 3DS, and I suspect it will be like that in Gen 7 too, but the N3DS will probably reduce the chances of that.

I've played since path of radiance, which was the best because it was my first, radiant dawn was terribad, awakening was okay until I found out its possible to level grind, which really just strait up ruins the game, not to mention the constant flood of free op weapons. Fan from Sacred Stones here, and I like both Awakening and Fates for two different reasons. In Awakening, I could get heavily immersed into the personality of each character in the game, and I probably spent hours just seeing what they would say next in each support. What Awakening seemed to lack was an interesting story, which Fates seemed to excel at, neither path has a complete happy ending to it. I can't really immerse myself into the characters in Fates though.

*Just* for the new pokemon games? No. That would be a waste. If you're going to buy one, go all in and get the New 3DS, regular or XL version, up to you what size screen you want and if you want interchangeable faceplates. The stabilized 3D effect is phenomenal and makes games that use it look beyond amazing. The camera nub is also damn handy in games that make use of it. The battery life is much better than the old model too, at least in my experience.
Now we have that out of the way, you can take advantage of this amazing little system by grabbing yourself any of the following titles: Kid Icarus Uprising, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, Bravely Default and/or Bravely Second (coming out in a week), Tales of the Abyss, Starfox 3D, Fantasy Life, Animal Crossing, Super Mario 3D Land, Hyrule Wariors Legends (also coming out in a week). Those are just the titles that I have personally played/experienced and all of them look fantastic with the stable 3D effect of the New 3DS, and they're stupidly fun to play.
The old 3DS wasn't really anything special beyond being much more powerful than the DS. The 3D effect was fucked and gave me headaches so I never used it. The New 3DS makes it so damn good that I crank it to max all the time and just leave it. The system as a whole is definitely worth it now, especially with such a nice catalog of games available now. Don't drop money on the system thinking that Pokemon is all it has, because you'd be wasting your money and a good system.

You can hold select when booting any VC game to load it in 1:1 original pixel density, and it also gives you a boarder.
Purple GBC for Yellow (and other GBC games, original grey GB for Red and Blue, and other GB titles).
Also, if you boot a GB game, hold both L+R, and you can use Y to toggle on the pea soup green colour.
