Never played much Tekken, I was more into 2D fighters, things like Guilty Gear and Street Fighter, but I really want to get this and main Gardevoir. Been my favorite pokemon since Gen 3.

Garde has a decently powerful combo string that she can do in neutral for ~60 extra damage, or guaranteed out of her counter. She also has Calm Mind as a buff that you can stack 3 times and expend one use of to power up certain attacks, letting you punish openings super hard with her range. If I'm not wrong she can also cancel the Calm Mind animation for mixups.
She seems pretty good, but it's still way too early to tell.

I'm considering several pokemon:
Mewtwo - A personal favourite Pokemon, and his bag of tricks are pretty impressive. Seems pretty well rounded.I play him in Smash, too, so consistency is nice.
Chandelure - Another personal favourite, I liked to play "lame" characters in the one NUNS game I played (NUNS2, Sasori, Shino), which this game obviously shares some similarities with. Could easily jive with me.
Lucario - I play the well rounded, shoto-like character in a lot of anime fighters, which seems to be Lucario's niche. Plus, his physical attacks are very Kenpo, which I enjoy aesthetically.
Machamp - A Pokemon I've always liked, and I do like to grapple and go ham, which he seems conducive for. On that note, if you know any other characters that are made to just go absolutely ham, let me know.
Gardevoir - The bottom of my list, mostly here because I heard she has some moves from Asuka of Tekken fame, of all pokemon. I'm largely indifferent to the Pokemon (Not my waifu, but I'm not rabidly anti-Gard), but Asuka IS my waifu so we'll see.

It's not really like Tekken from what I can tell.
Really, Pokken is quite unique. I've never seen a game very much like it. It looks pretty intuitive, as long as you're willing to take in all the game's mechanics one at a time and learn. There seem to be a lot of small things at play situationally, so the biggest challenge will be putting it all together, so to speak. I'll go ahead and type out a text wall on what I've observed, if you're curious. If not, feel free to skip the rest of this post.
2D experience will probably help you more than 3D experience - the combat is split into two phases, and one phase is fought entirely on a 2D plane. The concept of guard > attack > throw > guard is in the game so if you know how that RPS sort of meta works you're gonna have an easier time grasping the flow of things. There's an extra layer there, with a universal counter move. It's kind of similar to Focus in SFIV, and is expectedly strong against attacks and weak against throws.
There's no high or low block. Lows and overheads play another role, from what i understand - in how moves interact when pitted against eachother. Overheads crush lows, lows crush anti-airs, anti-airs crush overheads. Another game of RPS, if you will.
Outside of the duel phase, there's the field phase. That plays neither like tekken or 2D fighters, and is more similar to games like the recent Naruto fighters. You move freely in the field, and have a dedicated projectile button as you try to make your approach and transition to duel phase using whatever means your character has (or push out, if your character is oriented more toward defense/long range play).
The game also has assist/support characters, in a vein very similar to Marvel, Skullgirls, and various niche 2D anime games (Aquapazza, DFC, etc). They vary a lot in how they're used. Some help you interrupt your opponent, some help you apply pressure, some trap your opponent, some provide buffs, etc.

A nice touch is that the game has the exact dimensions of every stage visible on the stage select. I have to wonder if this game gets a strong competitive following, how big of a deal counterpicks will be, if at all. Smaller stages could be advantageous to characters who get a lot off of wall combos while bigger stages could benefit zoners or characters who focus on movement.

I do not believe that stages would be cut due to dimensions/wall-shape. There's no precedent for that kind of thing.
That synergy boost thing may be a factor, it remains to be seen. I don't have much information on that at hand so I can't evaluate it one way or another.
Things like FPS drops or obstructive visuals are more likely to get a stage banned than the walls, methinks. While some characters certainly have their preferences (ie. Chandelure would prefer a larger field while Machamp may want a more claustrophic setting), and so stage selection rules may be put into play, it's highly unlikely that any advantage would be so severe as to make it a big deal. Ring Outs and highly damaging wall combos are staples in other Bandai Namco 3D fighters, but still stage selection is still nowhere near a big a deal as it is in Smash.
Additionally, since many events are being directly sponsored by Nintendo themselves, and Nintendo is highly against banning things, no cut stages will likely be the default state of things. If this format causes problems, the scene may respond when it has the opportunity to use its own rules, but unless its overtly problematic its unlikely that they'd be willing to put forth the effort to change from what they'd been going with. Don't fix what ain't broke, and all that - especially since its been in arcades for a long time.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately there are no gamestops where I live so I'll have to go with my gut (so probably Weavile/Pikachu). On the upside the tournament is guaranteed to be 100% Pokemon fans who never touched a real fighting game in their lives (myself included) so I still have a decent shot at winning since I doubt anyone there took time to actually research the game.
