It took GF 6 months after XY's launch to show us Diancie. Even in past games, Darkrai was Gen 4's first event Pokemon (and the only one I could find a date for) and that was revealed 6 months after Gen 4 came out too.

We found out about Manaphy really early in Gen IV's reveal. We also found out about Victini really early in Gen 5's reveal.

This. Even IF there was an intended pattern, in this case, "every region has a Mythical Pokémon comparable to Mew", but they completely drop that in the most recent games, there is zero reason to suggest the next games would follow that old pattern.

What is really surprising is that this theory holds water, even if its a bit of a leaky bucket.

Game Freak DOES acknowledge Gens, but there is a very good chance that they didn't until Gen 6. And even then, they never call it a "Generation". They just gave small indications in the National Dex in X/Y.
So they are aware that the fanbase acknowledges a split in Gens, at least now.
I think though, they don't like the concept of Gens. I don't think they like working under that mentality, in their eyes, they're just making a new Pokémon game on whatever hardware they have, and add Pokémon when they feel its necessary. It's the fanbase who tacked on the term "Generation".
Look at Gen 2 for example. Half of the new Pokémon were just Genwun designs that never made it into Red/Blue. Gen 2 is very clearly just an expansion of Gen 1. They never EVER considered it a Gen of its own, I actually think they still don't.
Gen 3 and 4 were bigger jumps. Gen 5 and 6 were essentially both soft-reboots, (Gen 5 didn't work as well in terms of sales, so they did it again with Gen 6 to better success. Sadly pushing nostalgia, and dumbing down the games in the process, but I digress)
But I don't think GF ever looked at any of these leaps as a new "Generation", at least not in the same way the fans look at it.
That's why they always tend to introduce Pokémon in the anime and movies early, because the Generational gap is blurred to them. While we were all enjoying Ruby and Sapphire (as much as you can with that fucking Region anyway), GF were hard at work building Sinnoh and its Pokémon, and saw zero reason to not include Pokémon like Weavile, Lucario, and Manaphy in the Hoenn movies. Because to them, the Generational gap is almost non-existant, they were just adding Pokémon that "weren't in the games yet.", because they're just constantly building/expanding the world. They don't see the Generational gaps in the same way that we do.
