The special stat is worse than megas are in gen 6 seeing as anything above 80 base in special can rip the game a new one.
Even for a Gameboy game the visuals are lacking.
The AI for the trainers are pitiful and often leads to loops of them doing nothing to you.
On top of that the AI can heal and attack on the same turn while you can't.
Focus energy literally doesn't work.
Basically it throws RPG conventions out of the window and goes by its own incoherent rules.

Problem with that is that Gen 1 and 2 games play completely differently to their Gen 3/4 counterparts. It's best to get started in the beginning, and then work your way up to modern times to get acquainted with an antiquated system.

You know that's not permanent right? They have worse stats because they didn't battle and gain Stat Exp. Nothing stopping you from making up the points later by, you know, actually battling.

Battle every trainer, dont use exp all or rare candies, get those stats up. I just fought Blue before Victory Road with pokemon about 5 levels lower than his and two shotted, if not OHKO'd all of them.
It also helps if your team has a good type distribution so you can use them all.

Friendly reminder you can beat the E4 with a bunch of Sub lv 50s if you're not a retard and know how to exploit broken mechanics like crits, a single special stat, and moves life Fire Spin, or instant kill Hyper Beams with no recharge. Gen 1 kind of plays itself honestly, unless you do a really weird party and make the game purposefully harder for yourself.

It's funny, when I was a kid, I always found all my other party members criminally underleveled and had difficulty, but now? It's been a piece of cake. I just switch them out during trainer fights and not afraid to grind about a good 30 minutes to get someone up to snuff.
