I had a run where I picked Meganium and I had nothing with Ice so when I got to Lance I stopped playing since I was too stubborn to go train more. Couldn't beat Dragon Rush + Fire Blast + Blizzard + Thunder.

Yeah, I've done a monotype bug run of every game, and HG and Ruby were the hardest.
The original gold, ledian actually helped with ice punch, and back then it used the slightly better sp attack stat. The bugs in Ruby just weren't good, or the decent ones like armaldo, had no natural level up movepools.
