I'd use my favorites:
-Gengar
-Shiny Trevenant
-Snorlax
-Whimsicott
-Noivern
-(Mega) Banette
I wouldn't have six. Too much trouble to keep IMO.
I'd have:
-Ampharos
-Zorua (shouldermon)
-Some small bird or rodent type, possibly pic related or a Starly.
I could theoretically trade one of the local farmers for a Mareep and catch the other two locally in the woods or rural hills around where I live.

Probably a psychic so I can have conversation and treat as a near equal. Delphox most likely.
Flying because it's awesome. Togetic probably. A surfer too, Wailord or Tentracruel maybe.
Not necessarily my favorites in game, but ones that would be cool to actually travel with.

I'd just have a Chikorita as a bro. Snivy and Ralts are also good options, so I can see how they evolve and grow.
I would not have more than one. I would unconsciously shift all my attention to just one, and the others would feel bad.

This. How are you going to explain raring a bird big enough to ride on? How are you going to feed it?
The only IRL team is going to be Porygon2 and maybe an Analytic Magnemite knowing Teleport, Sunny Day, Rain Dance and Magnet Rise.

If I were in the pokémon world I'd probably try to work exploring ruins and other places with deepest lore, basically like a ruin maniac or Cynthia.
So I'd most likely have pokémon connected to those places, like Volcarona, Unown and Relicanth.
Picking 6 is fucking hard.
