Gen 2 is the only gen to truly advance the formula, and has essentially become the only standout in the series in terms of being unique besides gen 5. Gen 5 would be top of the list but the new Pokemon were ass and some of the gameplay gimmicks were shit. Overall, I've enjoyed every generation thoroughly, but 6 is the closest I've come to not even completing a game due to lack of enjoyment. That kid friendly shit does not belong in my idealic Pokemon world.

3 objectively did the most for the franchise in terms of "advancing the formula," but with the exception of 2 and 4, which were steps backwards mechanically, every generation has built on the last and made a more playable game. While gen 2 had by far the worst new Pokemon and the worst region, it did introduce some features which, while halfassed in their own game, eventually became good, including the new types and held items, so it gets the nod over gen 4, which only added the attribute split and had the slowest, shittiest engine ever, as well as the second worst region (and first worst, thanks to HGSS)

The engine was slower and the region was poorly laid out, so it played worse than its predecessor. Gimmicks like the radio don't make up for core mechanics.

Excellent Pokemon, I liked the only-new-Pokemon gimmick, unique region with lots of character, an actual attempt at a story, actually getting the gym leaders involved in the plot, unlimited TMs, first usable online system, sequels instead of third version, and BW2 may have had the best postgame in the series yet.
But overall, of course it's a matter of personal preference.

This is a fair assessment. I never finished BW2 so my judgement on 5 as a whole is skewed. Honestly one of my main issues is the fact that the graphics looked horrid.

again, i prefered gen 5 ever so slightly, but i that because im a fag for the "new region is isolated from other regions here's a fresh start" thing. combined, Plat and HGSS are the best in the series except for 2 things. If you give Plat and HGSS reuseable TMs and the gen 5 EXP system, they are objectively the best hands down.

I personally thought the Unova games are really a good improvement over Sinnoh games, Pokemon and difficulty wise.
Kanto games are really buggy and broken as shit. the only reason it gets much praise is the Pokemon itself.

BW2 > Platinum > Emerald > HGSS > BW = Yellow = FRLG > RB > DP > RS > Crystal > XY = ORAS > GS
As for gens, I'd say 5 > 4 > 3 > 1 > 6 > 2.
5 is the best generation. I feel like I don't even need to defend myself.
2 is by far the worst, and I'll tell you why: Kanto. Kanto's inclusion was a brilliant idea, but it was executed so poorly, and led to so much balance issues, that it ended up dragging the games down, uprooting the difficulty and level curve, and ruining the pokemon distribution throughout most of the early game. On top of this, the actual post-game isn't nearly interesting enough to fill an entire region--once the thrill of all the new places to explore wears off, there's not much to do there. HGSS fixed a lot of that and included a ton of wonderful features, but failed to address most of the problems the original games had, like the level curve and distribution issues.
6 is second worst, and would be the worst altogether (it definitely has the worst games) were it not for the new pokemon--gen 6 is where Game Freak finally figured out how to balance the simple old school designs and exciting newer designs. So I can't hate gen 6--it has the best pokemon of all the generations. the nonexistent difficulty means it'll be a while before i ever do another gen 6 playthrough, though.

I played a little of DP before I was going to purchase it and bailed, skipped BW and returned for BW2. After I bought BW2 I bought a copy each of BW for 10dollars (waste of money)
Never played Crystal, Platinum, Emerald because i never agreed would they stood for.
Always hated the idea of re-makes/re-telling/re-dos.

g2. Good follow up. Let down by pokemon count and Pokebabbies after their evolved forms had already existed.
g5. BW are awesome. BW are shit. But this is how every generation should be. 1st game then sequel (in the same generation)
g4. The region layout annoyed me to tears. Everything just seemed so slow, the running, the battling, the text even the saving.

As a whole, and not just mainline games, I feel as though Gen 4 offered the most. The mainline games, excluding Diamond/Pearl, were incredible. Of course, they weren't perfect, but they definitely held the most impact to me. Including spin-off games.
