Replaying Red again reminds me how much I miss how the safari was done then. It's got a great balance of cool and rare pokemon, a slick ass australian planes atmosphere, and the pokemon were just the right difficulty to catch.
Most Safari zones in newer games either have uninteresting pokemon or some weird gimmick. As a kid and now I've spent quite a bit of time in the Kanto safari zone.
It's one of the only things that I dont thinks been topped from the first game.

Yeah. It was inconvenient to traverse, looked like every other part of the world and had bland pokemon. The Emerald one did a bit better, having a ton of Johto pokemon then was nice back when we didnt have access to them.. but yeah, kinda lame.

It might've been due to stupid autism when I discovered that that is where you find wobbuffet.
A pokemon clearly described as hating light, living in caves and only going out during the night is found in grass during broad daylight.

Kanto Safari Zone was the best, I agree with the other anons. I honestly hope they try to repeat it again. They just need to fill it with cool. decently rare Pokemon that, to an extant, fit the gimmick of the Safari Zone.

It's a shit feature, not sure how people actually like having to throw stones at pokemon etc. It doesn't make sense to me. Finding rare pokemon, or the location itself, having a limited amount of balls etc. All that can still be achievable without the stupid stone/mud gimmick shit. Couldn't agree more, OP. It was a poorly designed, intentionally frustrating battle system that replaced strategy with dumb luck. There may be a way to do an area featuring an alternate capture method, but this ain't it. I hope it never comes back.
I will miss bait/rock, but to be quite honesto, it's pretty tiring to catch a Chansey/any rare in Red. Not even fun. Just a mindless grind for me.
