Honestly, people keep saying they will focus on Zygarde on Sun and Moon, but if we are getting a new gen, I would want it completely new, not a pseudo 6.5

It may have something to do with the alternate universe timeline stuff. Maybe it'll make more sense if we stop lumping games together as generations. I'm going to ramble and hope I hit something.
Red/Blue and GSC were clearly connected. They formed a complete story. Yellow was just for funsies.
RSE began a different timeline, Steel and Dark types and Pokemon breeding were no longer "newly discovered". FRLG showed this timeline's Kanto.
DPPt were shown to be connected to Johto through the Red Gyarados news coverage, even though technically at this point Johto hadn't been addressed in this timeline. HGSS added Johto's story into this timeline and established its connection to FRLG.
BW tied this timeline off by showing the "Bye-bye a go-go" Rocket grunt with his family, and BW2 finished the Plasma story. Also Colress more or less proved that Mega Evolution wasn't a thing in this timeline.

I think it's safe to say that all the "alternate timelines" involved up to this point were just retcons and cameos since they didn't expect for Pokemon to be around for as long as it has.
Only with X&Y and ORAS have they started to play with an overarching plot. ORAS especially drilled in the fact that these games in the Mega Evolution timeline are deliberately separate from any previous title. They're drawing a clear line saying that the war 3000 years ago caused an entire new timeline.
Since they're making such a distinction, they may be trying something new. For the first time, they introduced a sinister force beyond the region's evil team. Azoth and the Infinity Energy plot has crossed two games without any resolution. The anime is about to head into the Azoth plot, and apparently it's meant to be taken into conjunction with the games to some degree. The games may end up focusing on the Infinity Energy side of things before it all comes together.

The point is, they are no longer treating new games as isolated incidents. They deliberately started something new with XY, continued it with ORAS, and have left a whole lot of loose ends to be covered in future releases.
Here are the facts:

With all of this in mind, I'm going to make a prediction.
Sun and Moon will be "Gen 7" in the sense that it will have new Pokemon, a new region, new protagonists, and all that good stuff. However, it will still be carrying on the overarching story from the "Gen 6" games. There will still be a Zygarde-oriented "Pokemon Z" that ties them together as a sequel, but it will be a Gen 7 game.

I'm still going to wait until the games specifically release information related to Kanto, Johto, Sinnoh and Unova that directly contradicts them before any thought of them being another timeline. Even if there is a new timeline, we still end up with assuming things went down how they did in Gens 1 to 5 until any information says otherwise.

Kanto was loosely covered by Origins.
Johto and Sinnoh probably had extremely similar plots, except maybe some details. Team Rocket's forced Magikarp evolution scheme probably has something to do with a shiny Mega Gyarados, and was probably fucking around with Infinity Energy instead of evolution energy to power his operations. Both of those differences could tie in to this overarching plot they're hinting at.
And Colress has been discussed a lot regarding Mega Evolution since his goal was researching the full potential of Pokemon. In the Mega timeline, it's almost guaranteed that he'd be a Mega Evolution specialist.
It's more or less the same, no Butterfly Effect big differences.

I think they just decided to give the anime more freedom, and that's why the anime is straying away from the games. The Zygarde forms could totally just be an anime thing.
It could also be possible that the anime is stepping up it's game because Moon and Sun are going to be a 'final' main series game and thus, like the games, it's trying be more 'epic' as it reaches it's conclusion.
