It's more than just that.
Fearow doesn't get a good flying move until level 34, when it learns Drill Peck.
By that time, you could already have a Dodrio. What makes that even more delicious is that Dodrio learns Drill Peck at level 30, meaning it gets a solid flying move earlier than Fearow does.
I mean yes, your Spearow does start with peck, but that's a move that becomes useless very quickly.

Doduo may be a complete upgrade compared to Fearow but I still love using it regardless, something about its design just appeals to me. It's not even all that much worse to the point that it's bad and the bonus availability is definitely a plus.Reborn gave it a pretty cool shiny as well and it put in a lot of work in against the bug gym, the alternative shinies are actualy pretty cool and one of the better points of the game. The story is still absolute shit, though.

They all suck and Farfetch'd isn't even the one who sucks the most. He gets Swords Dance for boosting that Fly and Slash for when there's no time to set up. Plus, Farfetch'd sucks in the most stylish way. And the best thing is that you don't have to carry around an HM slave for Cut. Just throw it on Farfetch'd. He doesn't mind. What else was he going to do with that move slot? Hell, Cut isn't even that bad on him because he's Normal.
I'm using a Fearow in my Yellow playthrough and a Dodrio in my Red playthrough.

As far as fliers go
Aerodactyl > Dodrio > Fearow > Charizard > Pidgeot > Farfetch'd > Zapdos >>> Moltres > Articuno

Birds of gen 1:
Pidgeot: earliest available, worst stats but best Mirror Move user due to slightly higher Special, even of its rarely worth it.
Fearow: Better offensive stats, Drill Peck is the better offensive move, but you'll probably give it Fly anyway. Also available early on, evolves sooner too. Also gets Mirror Move but it's only a novelty.
Dodrio: Best offensive stats out of the normal/flying types, marginally improved move pool with Tri Attack (no status chance in gen 1 though), no Mirror Move but it's hardly useful anyway. Otherwise is basically identical. Available about halfway through the main game, arguably at the most useful point (Fly HM and grass gym, ohohoho).
Farfetch'd: Slowest and weakest, does get Swords Dance and Agility I think, good HM slave and gets boosted xp if you do feel like raising one. Slash is handy, but still won't be critting much. Available early-mid game.
Aerodactyl: best stats offensively, but zero move pool. Better defensively against normal type etc, but the fact I can't teach it Rock Slide literally makes it worthless to me. Still a solid choice, but no stab on those Hyper Beams. Only available late game.
Legendary birds: generally the best, even Articuno and Moltres have great uses in gen 1 (90acc Blizzard and Fire Spin/Agility shenanigans, plus Sky Attack I guess), and Zapdos is always great. But, you're bit of a faggot for using them. I've done it, we all have, and they're good for something different. All pretty late game, with Zapdos at the earliest and Moltres at the latest.
Yellow Round: Charizard
Good option, will probably evolve around mid-late game, would recommend something like Dux up until it finally evolves. Better options than the non-legandary flyers. Whether you're using any or all of the starters, consider it for a change from the Normal/Flying brethren.
