I've got something silly to ask about Gen 1.
How much more enjoyable does playing with sound make the game?
I've had a lot of problems with the game (pic related is a list that I sent one of my friends after I did my run of Yellow), but I'm wondering if I would've enjoyed my recent catch-em all run if I just played with fucking sound.
Thoughts? I'd also enjoy any comments on pic related.

personally i switch on and off at certain points — it's an ok OST but it's no Earthbound or SMT

to an extent, yes, turning it on during evo's is a acknowledgment of your progression and training, so it's like a reward / treat for achieving certain milestones — if i'm in a part of the game where i know i like the music, i turn it on, and enjoy it — otherwise i switch it off as it can get repetitive and annoying

I'd agree it's minimal, but this doesn't equate to it being shit — for me this leaves space for you to build your own story around the skeleton you're given, and i distinctly remember friends playing through when the games were first released actually responding vocally to the shit NPC's would say, which is a pretty cool effect for an RPG to have really

disagree that most do although it is true some do — if you look at the original japanese dub of the anime, and also other examples like dragonball, these kind of jokes are prevalent in japanese culture, even when it's aimed at kids
you could draw parallels between this and your classic Western cartoons (MGM, some Looney Tunes material) which would have visual, physical, slapstick gags aimed at all ages, as well as sexual innuendo and references to other more adult topics like alcoholism and drugs etc — nowadays a PC blanket tends to censor most of this, but some Western cartoons do still blur the line, you see it in Adventure Time, another one is Problem Solvers, and I'm sure there's other examples too

are there forums any /tr/ainers and /vp/oreons are using regularly that you'd suggest signing up for to organise IRL meets? 4chan isn't really suited to it, but i'm not really keen on signing up to serebii forums or anywhere else, unless anyone can suggest somewhere worthwhile

Serebii does have the biggest community, which means it has the best chance of having someone in your area. Though you need to be careful, since a lot of them are underage, and that could end up in a bad time.

OP again, expanding on the story points, i much prefer this to the handholding and heavily directed style of the more recent games — it's more fun for me to pull the small hints you're given together and imagine the world and my my way through it
more thoughts on point 2 as well, does it bother you that a lot of the male NPC's talk about their shorts?

Does anyone have any preference for places in their local area to meet? Personally, I'm down for anywhere public, ideally with cool locations nearby (museums, arcades, decent food outlets or stores or whatever) — then there's always something to do around the meet if /tr/ainers want to socialise and hang out beyond obvious battles and trades

in the past i was signed up with serebii, and there were some official distro events, i arranged to meet with a few of the posters there, it was a pretty mixed bunch, including a mother and her kids.
i actually have lots of experience working with kids and the underage element wouldn't worry me personally, i can see why it's problematic, and it is something i'd want to avoid — ideally i do want to meet with /tr/ainers around my age group to avoid any kind of added responsibility

yeah know i get that — if i was to attempt to organise meets on a more public forum i'd make sure it was all very open, honest, safe etc and would try to make sure there were no 15y/os or younger coming unless they had a guardian with them
but again, altho i'd ideally want to meet with trainers who are at LEAST in their early 20's, i'm in my late 20's
still, i work with teens and children professionally, i'm got no reason to fear the van

I realized i should post the reasons why.
-Partial trapping ban. --> self explanatory. Its broken and fast things literally stall you forever.
-Overall sleep ban. It takes a turn to wake up so fast things like gengar can sleep you forever. Yeah he only learns hypnosis and its 60% accuracy but its still far too op to be fun.
-Chansey ban. Well its simply too good. Even alakazam and its unrivaled typing has more downsides.

Yeah this is OP again, I'm skeptical too but do want to give this a try — the local wireless trade function needs to be utilised, and one of the great things about /vp/ is when people get hyped on connecting with each over wifi, and cool shit happens, like the magnemite trading thing in gen5
anyway, the fact this feature forces you to actually go out and meet others is interesting, you could say it's foreshadowing the core ideals of GO! preparing trainers to get out, go meet more trainers, and connect IRL as well as via tech

I don't agree with a bunch of your points, many of them are natural elements of the franchise (like the easy difficult), RBY sure is annoying with the movesets, but it becomes more doable if you use a guide for TM and bulbapedia for Gen 1 movesets of each mon.
About the music, I always play any game with native music of it, I only mute it if I'm grinding and it starts to take a long time (in this case I put some MP3 with OST/Remixes from others games), so the grind becomes less tedious. Other than that, 100% of the time with the game music, I think that a soundtrack of a game complements it, so I don't turn it off even with a game that I know each note from each music like RBY.Btw if you want to do a "catch-em all" run this means that you would "grind" a lot, so in this specific situation of catching, training and evolving a bunch of mons for dozens of hours, even I would mute the volume.

You can't seriously be using "it's ok with a guide" as a counterargument.

It's less of a grind than you'd think. Well, ok - some catches are a bitch, but the levelling isn't. Although don't get me wrong, it's fucking tedious having to hammer through all the XP-All dialogue, but there's not actually too many Pokemon that you have to level up. By the end of the game, you're usually just having to farm the Elite 4 for that fucking Dratini to level up, so you tend to just stick whatever else needs the levels in the party while you use the XP-All.
Pre-E4 however, as I mentioned in the picture, most wild Pokemon are underleveled and you've got no info as to if or when they'll learn appropriate moves for their type, so you'd be a fool if you tried to farm for levels prior to the Elite 4. Not to mention the fact that post-Koga, you've got the overleveled Zapdos anyway, and therefore no longer need to care much about your other Pokemon. Heck, I could almost say the same of Snorlax, which feeds back into a lot of the issues I mentioned, like how it's barely possible or even all that beneficial to play the type advantage game.
I wonder, since you can rebattle trainers in Gen 2, what does that do to the level issues? Does it make it easier or more viable to catch and use wild Pokemon?

To be honest you're probably best off just replacing it. Buy another gbp, just be certain the screen isn't suffering from cracking or bleeding and a tri-wing. Replacing the screen on the gbp is crazy easy. Hold onto the pcb from the replacement and the rubbers for the buttons as back ups too.

I fix and mod Gameboys. That shit is ususally bad news. You can either search ebay for a gameboy that wont turn on, and harvest the screen. Gameboys that wont turn on usually go for 12 bucks so you cant go wrong with that.
Replacing the screen is super easy, you just need to remove the triwing screws and remove the screen by lifting the little tabs that hold the ribbon cable in place.
Make sure you don't force it, or you can damage the ribbon cable.
You could also just spend 20-25 dollars on a working Gameboy/Pocket/Color

having to grind the old fashion way can actually get a little annoying, I'm pretty underleveled (though still not hard at all) but generally when I attempt to gain exp on trainer fights switching in onto my other pokes can scarily increase the difficulty sometimes, I tried fighting Koga to level one of my lv 18 shitmon by switching in and I just got BTFO with various status effects and/or not having enough HP to survive another attack even with potions. Then when I just decided to bring out a mon with good speed and a SE attack I just ripped him a new one. Though I'm probably really underleveled, the mon I used was only lv ~36 and my highest at the time was 37, so maybe I need to slow down a bit.
