Unless they started with this one, the regular sized 3DS is always TN, it's only the XL that has a chance of having an IPS top screen. All 3DS bottom screens are TN.

Damn, I have never seen that before. Fucking jelly, but at this point, I'm just going to hold onto my plain black IPS top screen 3DS, it's too close to being phased out anyway.
I honestly really hope Nintendo will just go with a standard resolution and at least be consistent in what kind of screens for the next handheld, but I don't have high expectations.

They're both types of LCD screens.
TN stands for twisted nematic, are older and cheaper, they have slightly faster response times, but poorer colors and contrast, especially blacks and from angles.
IPS stands for in-plane switching, are newer and more expensive, and have much better colors.
Nintendo has essentially made it a lottery because there's no way of telling what you will get short of powering the 3DS up, and you can get a mix with a different top and bottom screen.

I really like mine. The higher PPI and the general feel of the handheld is much comfier than the XL. The matte surface just feels nice too. Pretty sad that I got a TN screen, but it isn't that big a deal since my n3DSXL has an IPS top.
What really bugs me though is that Nintendo doesn't let you use one ID over multiple devices. Can't access pokemon bank unless I buy another subscription or wait a couple months for my current to run out and switch over. Pretty annoying since I want to try the transfer to SuMo once that's live.
