G/S gave a us a day/night cycle, and introduced weather moves like sunny day.
Espeon and Umbreon were given an evolution based on that day/night cycle. Espeon is literally a Sun Pokemon.
Sun & Moon is the second 3D title, having it loosely mirror G/S the way X/Y mirrors R/B just makes too much sense.
I'm not saying everything will line up, but it's got plenty circumstantial evidence.

The only dual type that would work for gatr is dark, since that goes with all of the main biting moves/strong jaw. That said, pure water gatr is great too since it helps with bulk, and water/dark gatr would literally just be a worse gyarados.I hope gatr's mega makes it actually more than just an inferior gyarados that gets sword dance, desu

Next to the Unova starters [Serperior and Emboar are outright outclassed by Darmintan and Lilligant; Samuwott is only good because B/W has a massive drought of water-types.]; the Jhoto starters are the worst.
