This and the Kanto Pokemon League made me question the whole "anime level" thing. By this logic Pikachu should be on par with virtually anything and yet Sceptile who is implied to be a level 100 in terms of strength traveled/trained less then Pikachu.
Although I'm sure Charmander --> Charmeleon (5 episodes later) --> Charizard
Goomy --> Goodra within what, an episode or two
Krabby who's never fought --> Kingler all kind of disapprove this.

Remember that time Sabrina sent out an Abra that evolved during the battle and instantly became too strong for Ash's party? And then how Ash went out of his way to get a ghost pokemon because "ghosts are strong against psychic" even though that was only technically true but absolutely wrong in practice in Gen 1? And then Ash didn't beat Sabrina but he got a badge because that Haunter he didn't even capture made Kadabra laugh?
Season 1 always seemed to jump between sticking too close to the game mechanics and completely ignoring them. And it seemed like it would always go with the approach that made the least sense.

At least they had an excuse. The pokemon anime is based on the game. While Yu-Gi-Oh wasn't even soley about a card game until everyone begged for it. They were still testing out the card game mechanics, effects, and whatnot when the "Duelist Kingdom" was going on.

Wouldn't it be the opposite though in the games? Levels wouldn't matter that much unless you grind your Pokemon like crazy to the point it's like 10 or 20 levels higher than everyone else. You can pass the game even with under leveled Pokemon. It wouldn't be fun, but it's do able.
