I think it would be better to have cycled moves. A total of 8 moves, but you can only pick from a set of 4 at any given time. This way it prevents things such as >>25392138 happening and is based purely on unpredictability. Each set is chosen as the Pokemon enters and can not be switched unless the Pokemon is either switched out, or lets say 2-3 turns have passed.

This is a horrible idea by itself. You could probably get away with having as many as six moveslots, but only if you restrict what moves can actually go into each one, like having two static signature moves of the species, two for levelup/breedable moves and two for TMs/tutors.

Only if one of several things happened:

1) The 5th slot was for protect and protect only. Since it's a special kind of protect, Imprison wouldn't work any more, but there is also a 0% chance for a double protect to happen. If you use it twice, you are guaranteed failure.
In addition, this Protect slot would only be visible in doubles or triple battles. Unsure about rotations.

2) This slot is reserved for the pokemon's signature move, if it has one. If the pokemon has more than one, choose the least shit one.

3) You can do whatever you want with your fifth slot, and it acts like any of the other four, but you can not hold an item (or you must hold a certain item whose entire purpose is to give this 5th slot)

How is this?

Pokemon can learn 8 moves.... BUT

You can only 'set' 4 at a time.

So before battle, you equip the 4 moves you want to use, and you'll only have access to those moves in battle, the other 4 moves are locked out

But maybe one or two pokemon, when they megaevolve switch their set 4 moves with their stored ones?

It'll make having HM moves on your mains, not a big deal and if you get a good level up move but it's not appropriate for ingame/online you can swap it out before you do one or the other without having to go learn it again after

No. It may seem like five moves would allow lots of fun strategies and make all Pokémon better, but really all it does is lower the ceiling of strategy in picking your moveset; a lot of Pokémon would love to have a fifth moveslot, but being able to have everything it needs makes the game a lot more predictable and reduces the importance of picking moves carefully.

How about pokemon just have access to all the moves they've learned but you can only equip 4 at a time.
I mean, you can already do this except we'd only be cutting out the time it takes to go to your bag and use TMs or going to the move relearner or whatever.
