Platinum is objectively the best Pokémon game, in my opinion. Solid Pokédex, polished as heck graphics, good endgame and an involving story.
It's always the first one I recommend to people who haven't played.
I'd choose HG/SS if the level scaling and story were a bit better, but Platinum overlaps it in most areas, outside of nostalgia.

Gen 4 was objectively the WORST.
Gen 1-3 had the best compositions, but they were ruined by shitty soundfonts. Gen 4-5 relied too much on synths. Gen 5 in particular sounded very generic, usually Pokemon music has a certain feel to it that makes it easy to identify what series its from. Gen 6's soundfont felt a little too soft in some places and the compositions were a bit flat, although ORAS's soundtrack sounded nice when it wasn't limited to MIDI french horns.
