Gyarados is my favorite so I did it in every run.
it's a really good buy though, gives you access to something powerful early on
Friendly reminder that there is a limited amount of items you can have, even stored in the PC.
Friendly reminder the old rod serves no other purpose than catching a magikarp and it can not be tossed, so it permanently takes up one item slot.
Buying your magikarp for 500 is actually the only logical option.

Depends on game. In RBY gyarados kinda sucks so you won't typically use him. In dppt gyara is much better, as is xy

Do the math, genius. It's good for Hyper beam and that's about it. There are loads of better mons in g1.
Pokeball is 200 pokedollars. He sell them for 500 (pokeball included). Given the timing and the fact it is possible to fail a catch assuming you don't take the time to weaken him (two pokeballs = 400 pokedollars) it is well worth it and not as much of a scam as the game want you to believe.

Yeah, look up the catch formula, and if you check out any online pokedex you can find magikarps catch rate.
I'm not sure if this holds true in gen1 where the catch mechanics are slightly different, or if it's 2 onwards
