If it introduces new starters and a new region, it's Generation 7.
If it doesn't introduce new starters, or if it doesn't introduce a new region, it's still Generation 6.

But gen 6 wasn't a blunder. The graphical innovations were a massive step-up from the previous gen, it had a great story, fun gameplay, and introduced wondertrading. Was it the best gen? Probably not, but in a decade or so, I'm sure I'll be nostalgic for it.

"Generation" in the way we describe them is a fan term. As long as the game is being produced as has new content they can call it a generation and still technically be correct.

Only thing that I have hesitations about is all the unreleased forms, Magearna, and Volcanion. While Volcanion and Zygarde are still technically gen 6, the games they are involved in could be Gen VII.
Maybe it will be Gen VII (New region, new pokemon etc.) but echo what Gen II did. New region connected to another region (S. Kalos/Spain and N. Kalos).
So with that in mind, Gen VII is Gen 6.5 like Gen II was Gen 1.5.
