I'm a newfag to gen 6, last game I bought was HeartGold, I bought Alpha Sapphire with a 3DS XL yesterday but I haven't really started my adventure. I decided to go with AS because I got Sapphire when I was 13 in 2003-2004, yet I can't really choose between Torchic and Treecko because I like them both.
As far as battling is concerned, Mega Blaziken is overpowered while Mega Sceptile is nothing special.

Yeah, BW has a really big level jump between the initial E4 run and the postgame trainers (not just Cynthia, even the standard trainers). It's not too difficult to gain the necessary levels (just grind on level 60+ Audino on post-game routes), but the sharp spike in opponent levels is definitely a surprise.
It's still worth finishing at some point, just to get to the "real" champion battle.

They exclusively appear in shaking grass patches. Just ride back and forth outside a stretch of grass and one will start shaking usually within a minute. In postgame, Route 12 (I think) works pretty well for this.

Yeah, others will disagree but I think they butchered Mauville.
Basically, Gen 5 made a biggish town with lots of segmented areas, not too hard to navigate because it never makes a full circle but impressive in scale. Then Gen 6 decided to upstage that town with Lumiose, a.k.a. the most hellish town you will ever travel through, it's one giant circle with camera angles that make it difficult to find your position. When they made ORAS I guess they felt having a gaint town with multiple loadpoints is a necessity so they turned Mauville into Mallville.

Check the wiki page for EVs.
In short, you can mix both, but through a normal play you will mix the EVs. Dont try perfect EVs in a regular playthru.

maybe I've just been lucky, or is the catching rate with regular Pokéball(s) better in Alpha Sapphire than Original Sapphire? because so far none of the Pokéballs I threw failed to capture a Pokémon.
