Huge Power's Japanese name is Chikaramochi, which translates to Muscleman. But it's also a pun.

Chikara = Power
Mochi = Rice cakes

The rabbit association comes from a Japanese folktale about a rabbit who lives on the moon and makes rice cakes.

Hence why the two fully-evolved Pokemon who get it, Azumarill and Diggersby, are both rabbits. Doesn't explain Mega Mawile, but I guess Mega Mawile's 2 sets of horns could be viewed as similar to rabbit ears.
>>
that is neat
>>
>>25286781
at first I was going to call you a fucking faggot for making up that moon rabbits make rice cakes but then I looked it up and found out that moon rabbits actually make rice cakes and shit
>>
>>25286781
so, the inevitable rabbit-based Fire Starter will have Huge Power as a HA
>>
Mawile also probably has it because of fairy typing, and its association with the moon. Maybe.
>>
Big Pecks is a pun too. Y'know, like big pectorials.

A loooot of shit is explained when you look at the Japanese names for things. For example Cofagrigus gets Disable, which is called Temporary Bindings, which makes sense for a mummy-related thing. There are tons of things like that.

Azumarill made Mochismo! Confirmed! Confirmed!

Minochi also confirmed for made by Azumarill!
>>
>>25286825
Also Draco Meteor is a pun on meteor shower, which sounds like it has the word for dragon in it in Japanese.

Not to mention Kingdra and Dragalge are Dragon types because seahorses are called sea dragons in asia.

Would've done a better job if you posted Beedrill/Lucario or Sceptile or something
>>
>>25286951
It's ability is Solar Power, not Hellfire Power. Its ability makes zero sense on it.

It needs....something. Some better ability. They should change mega pokémon's abilities from time to time to spice things up, when new games come out. Especially the weaker megas.

the sun is hell
think about it
>>
>>25287039
I'm thinking really hard. Maybe I'm just not thinking hard enough.

Oh! Also I just thought of an alternate ability for it. Wanna know what Contrary is called in Japanese? Devil's Advocate. Imagine the Overheats.
>>
>>25287066
Contrary's JP name translates to Perverse, not Devil's Advocate. Bulbapedia just has shit translators and an SJW family-friendly policy.
>>
>>25287116

This. Never ever rely on Bulbapedia's Japanese translations for things, they're shit.

You need much more than that.

Both are valid translations. They mean the same thing.
>>
>>25287176
Show me one example of amanojyaku being used to mean Devil's Advocate outside of pokemon.
>>
>>25286890
I completely forgot that Houndoom had a mega.
>>
>>25287116
"Perverse" in the broad sense of the word, not the sense that most people think of when they see the word. Honestly, "Contrary" is a fine translation.
>>
>>25287188
Look up what "devil's advocate" actually means. It's pretty much the same thing as being perverse.
>>
>>25287269
>a person who expresses a contentious opinion in order to provoke debate or test the strength of the opposing arguments.
That isn't the same as being contrary.

>>25287268
I never said Contrary was a bad translation, just that Bulbapedia has shit translators.
>>
>>25287188
Devil's Advocate would have been a fine localization of the ability name if it were only given to dark types, because the Japanese name of the ability is also the name of a rather evil creature from Japanese mythology. The meaning is similar enough and it invokes a similar feel.

But Pokemon doesn't go with the wordplay here, so there's no need to go with that localization.
>>
>>25287278
Taking the opposite side just for the sake sparking debate is exactly what being perverse or contrary is.
>>
>>25287364
>opposite
Contentious != opposite.

Futakuchi Onna, the demon that Mawile is based on, is almost always depicted eating Mochi for whatever reason.

I thought it's more the fact that Azumarill can swim, let alone dive with its weightless beach ball body, and Diggersby can dig and bulldoze with its ears, both of which would require immense strength.
>>
This mochi theory is a reach desu
>>
>>25286781 (OP)
This is actually very cool information. Thank you!
>>
Alright well scrapping Contrary, I went ahead and looked at list of abilities and jotted down what Mega Houndoom could get.

There's not much. The only real candidates are

Adaptability (Probably a bit much)
Battle Armor (Not great on non-defensive mons)
Drought (Same bucket as solar power at least)
and Intimidate, which I dislike slapping onto everything, but on the other hand is very fitting for it, if not really all that helpful.
>>
>>25286781
This is also why Jigglypuff and the Nidos evolve with the Moon Stone.

Also, U-Turn's Japanese name means "Dragonfly Turn", hence why it's a bug move.
>>
>>25291845
In that case most mons would have Huge Power.
>>
>>25286951
> Beedrill / Lucario
> Adaptability
Makes sense to me, they are part of the mega that "just gets bigger and stronger".

Well, I'd like to think that since they Mega-evolve, they have better control over their powers, hence the "adapt" theme.

Sceptile's tail became a lightning rod. It's pokemon, what do you expect, a keychain that comes to life?
>>
>>25293605
Well, has anyone really been far as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

>>25287116
>Perverse
>Not appropriate ability for Devil Dog

It still works.
>>
>>25291895
It actually makes pefect sense, considering how much influence Japanese culture has on Pokemon.
>>
>>25293629
Adaptability is about adapting to your environment, not to yourself. Hence Porygon-Z, Eevee, Crawdaunt and Dragalge. Beedrill and Lucario are exceptions
>>
Pure Power's JP name is something relating to yoga, hence why Medicham gets a differently named ability with the same effect.
>>
>>25287401
according to some obscure site called Wikipedia the prototypical Futakuchi Onna story involves a miser's rice stores dwindling from his Futakuchi Onna wife's head-mouth
> Because she never ate a thing, and was still a hard worker, the old miser was extraordinarily thrilled with her, but on the other hand he began to wonder why his stores of rice were steadily decreasing.
> To his horror, he saw his wife’s hair part on the back of her head, her skull split wide revealing a gaping mouth. She unbound her hair, which reached out like tentacles to grasp the rice and shovel it into the hungry mouth.
>>
>>25296520
Exactly. Don't forget Feebas too.

People just want to stick Adaptability on everything.
>>
>>25296520
>Adaptability is about adapting to your environment, not to yourself

Then why does it only affect STAB? Non-STAB moves should get 1.5x bonus instead
>>
They also kind of fucked up with Mega Launcher. It powers up "Pulse" moves but then Aura Sphere randomly which seems out of place in English.

In reality, all the moves it powers up share "Hadou" in their name in Japanese.
>>
>>25296853
even origin pulse, which apparently has been tested and is powered up by mega launcher?
>>
>>25291839
That doesn't disprove his point.
