Well, according to Sinnoh legend, humans and Pokemon were once the same. Therefore, it stands to reason that these attacks which would be incredibly deadly to humans such as ourselves would only be as effective on humans as Pokemon because in that universe humans basically are Pokemon.

I do have HeartGold and Diamond (didn't get Platinum when it came out and barely cared anymore about Pokémon at the time) but I only made a single playthrough in Diamond and I didn't really like it and in HG I don't even remember buying Hyper Beam.

I would check out Platinum. It redeems Sinnoh as a region. DP and XY really suffer from first versions syndrome and you can tell the devs were lazy and decided they would only fix it for the 3rd version release.

Many opposing teams were rebalanced which makes single player much better. The dex is also slightly better. The game is also faster in general even if it is Gen 4's engine. It has a decent box legend and Cynthia becomes a more prominent character. It's pretty much the games DP should have been. BW2 are my favorite but Platinum is decent enough for those who couldn't get through DP. It redeemd the region for me.
