It's weak and its movepool is shit. You'll spend most of your time hiding behind your partner. And SMD doesn't have Hidden Abilities so you're not going to get saved by Contrary Leaf Storms.
Snivy and Fennekin is one of the more popular combos.
Fennekin is a REALLY good partner.

Snivy has a pretty small move set and not a impressive starting one either afaik.
Fennekin is better about it, especially starting with Psybeam to snipe 24/7. Best used as a partner for AI sniping shenanigans. Will strictly be a special attacker though, will most likely get fucked over by sandstorm/light screen etc.
Piplup is okay if it has to be your starter choice. I personally don't know much myself, though, if it at least learns bubble you're good 2 go.
Also in my experience Dual-Types are really good because STAB bonuses > Super Effective especially with the new mechanics in this game. Starters that can evolve into dual-types are good if you do plan to use evolution later.

Chikorita bottom tier? Huh. I thought it was really good strictly because you can make it into a cleric and just basically have your team not die via defensive buffs/cures.
I used Froakie and I personally don't think he's bottom but has a weird thing going for him, something the lines of just master of none but not in a terrible way.

Chespin is ri-fucking-diculous in PSMD due to the way Pin Missile and Rollout function in these mechanics. Fennekin, Charmander and again Chespin make good backups as the partner rather than MC thanks to their range. Totodile's pretty stronk too but mostly has melee range attacks and works better as the hero than the partner

Option 3, you as Piplup and partner as Fennekin.
As the leader, it's more important to have at least a little bulk, and Water typing helps with that. Most fights involve you duking it out with an enemy Pokemon while your good for nothing partner twiddles their thumbs behind you. Fennekin is a great partner because Psybeam and Ember can jump past you and hit the enemy. You'll want Bubblebeam to help close the distance between ranged enemies, but you'll also want some decent attacking moves for up close. Piplup gets Fury Attack. Multi hit moves are broken as all fuck, so enjoy.
