I would love to replay Crystal, but I just can't force myself to go back to a time when several types has such bare-bones options for moves, and certain pokemon were just screwed with their stats not matching their typing.

You can, but, there's still the issue of move slots. Move slots are made up of one byte, 256 moves, and 00 and FF can't be used because they're used for functions, so that leaves you with 254 moves. GSC alread has 251 moves in it, so that's only room for three before you have to replace existing moves.

You could theoretically give moves two bytes of data for its slots, which would give you a hypothetical 65536 (minus two) moves and no need to ever worry about slots again, but you would have to rewrite every single piece of the game involving moves so that it uses two bytes instead of one. It's theoretically doable but nobody's done it since it requires a lot of work.

Well the few moves I attempted to create don't look nearly as good as OP's (I just copied existing animations, maybe added an extra effect or changed the sound clip, like my Fairy Wind is just Razor Wind with a different sound effect), but yeah, you have the gist of it. Basically the way I figure out anything in this disassembly is by looking at how similar things are done, analyzing them, and copying what they do exactly, changing what's needed to get the effect I want. Pic related is what the code for move animations look like, this specific one is just me copying Flash, removing the shake animation at the end and adding a flashing animation at the end (the one that appears when a Pokémon gets hit).

Well that wouldn't work exactly. You'd want to make a different effect copied from Baton Pass but remove the "new Pokémon has the same stat changes as the old one" effect, otherwise the move would have a combined U-Turn and Baton Pass effect.

simple method of using animation routines already in game and having the play at the right time in the right combos. Would recomend doing it unless you have experience with python and such. I am using Cygwin with windows for python and "Notepad++" for editing the attacks.

Theoretically you would have to create a new sprite or recolor an existing sprite, then add it to the graphics tables, then point to it in your animations asm. I haven't done it personally so I'm not sure if its that simple. Usually its just easier to use existing sprites.

It's similar to how much a game is compressed; older games would squeeze as much as possible into a few MB, and in the specific case of GSC, Game Freak had Iwata make a special compression method for the game that saved a ton of space in the ROM and allowed a truncated Kanto to be put in the game (not that this isn't a well-known story).

Now people don't even try, current-gen PC games go above 40GB at times because devs don't give a shit about space and just assume the customer will buy a 1TB harddrive to make more room.

Hyperspace Fury only works with Hoopa, so it can't be used in gen 2. :^)

For real though, OP, you should make something fun like Ice Ball, Icicle Spear, Magical Leaf, Ingrain, Heat Wave or Grass Whistle, rather than just those high base power moves. But anything would be neat. Please just make more!

Easily one of the best threads I've ever seen on /vp/, 10/10. The only animation that I would alter is Overheat since it would be better without the Flame Wheel intro, but other than that I love all of them.

I especially like how the animations stay very true to the style of Gen II and look like they could really be in the games. Also, where do you OP come up with all these ideas like adding those Razor Leaf leaves to the animation of Grasswhistle? I would never have enough imagination to create animations like this.

Also, if you're still taking requests, I'd love to see Magneton using Flash Cannon.

Yea recently I was told TES Online was like 80 GB download where meanwhile you can download FF14 like 3-4 times with that amount of space. I am pretty sure there are hard drives that still exist that would never be able to hold TES Online, personally though I am used to counting by the GB and often only buy hard drives by the TB. Still I can't help but to think that someone honestly thought 80 GB space uptake is completely fine just for a MMO. Seem like people just don't give a shit anymore.
