I personally don't find them awful (TBPH, very few pokemans can be considered that) but they definitely are the blandest starters. There's nothing visually interesting in them, but at least they aren't offensive to the eye. They're just boring and uneventful, maybe the closest we can get to literal IT JUST GETS BIGGER.
