Clair was Dragon Den elder's student but failed their challenge and other examples like Janine being an awful leader just like Flannery. Lance was an E4 for the sole reason your Rival has defeated it and he has accepted the E4 role when Stevwn has left for example.

I can see why people would be disappointed with Alder. If it was a battle shonen, Alder would fit the very definition of jobber, and no one likes jobbers.

He's my favorite champion. Rather than just 'cool younger person with strong pokemon' he had a bit more depth, and an actual backstory, which is rare for Pokemon. He also has a bitchin' encounter theme.
His team was utter garbage though. I'd say the absolute worst of any Champion. Least it improved in the PWT.
