They wanted to maintain the Cartoon style using simple textures and cell shading, and I really don't see problem with this, the thing is: The resolution of the 3DS is kinda low, so Cell Shading don't look 100% good as it should (at distance it looks very pixelated) but I still like it.
In Gen 7 is probable of it improve considerably, using better resolution and more detailed textures of the new hardware.
