Most of them stopped watching when Misty left, besides the few that lingered into the AG era because they thought Misty would come back after Hoenn. They base all they know on the anime from 15 years ago.
A lot of them assuming the Misty/May switch was going to be like the Brock/Tracey one, where the writers would bring back Misty and reunite the original trio when Hoenn ended. Little did they know May would come back for Battle Frontier, and then when DP started and Dawn was introduced they basically had reality set in.
