I still remember the Ramos gym battle, the amount of shit Ash pulled out of his ass there was astounding.
They were nearing the 5th gym battle and they wanted a memorable final battle between fully evolved pokemon
They didn't want to give Ash a greninja too early, so they gave him goomy and made him evolve really fast.
That's also why they gave Clemont a luxio that evolved so quickly.
