Actually, let me change that. Gen 1 and 2 Gengar were fine, anime Gar is cool too. Mega Gengar is great. Not gen 3+ Gengar that just looks like a fat blob with a big grin. Boring as fuck. Laughing anime Gengar or evil-looking early Gengar look great. Not as good as Haunter, but still great.

It's mainly just a design thing. I don't like it aesthetically. Beyond this, I don't like it conceptually. I get that it's a land shark, but how does that explain the physiology, the spikes and coloration, the spindly limbs, etc. It seems like a bunch of random ideas tossed together with no solid core concept. I don't like its typing (it just rubs me the wrong way). Of course, the fact that it's been everywhere since it was first revealed and always obscenely strong means that I have had some unpleasant encounters with it.

The spikes and huge fins are for digging/swimming through sand. The thinness gives it a streamlined look that reflects its speed, while the large sharp features reflect its power. The color is almost entirely solid, with a bright imposing front to intimidate foes.
It's not just a land shark, it's a shark dragon and a pseudo. They could have easily just drawn a shark with legs, but that's fucking lame. Design isn't just about conveying an object, it's about conveying an image, and Garchomp's image is power and danger.

As for the thing about digging/swimming through sand, this is never mentioned as being Chomp's form of transportation. Sure, it learns Dig, but it's described in the Pokedex as flying close to the ground. Now, I can tell you that all those spikes would increase its drag and make it much slower while flying. The fins I have no problem with at all.
To me, Garchomp looks like a try-hard. It also blends in with the rest of the Gible line to me to the point that Gabite and Garchomp are overly similar. I can tell that you like Garchomp quite a bit, and I respect that. My bro's Garbodor, so I'm used to people coming down on it.

Garchomp is a sand shark, swimming through sand is just something it does. Like this thing.
There is no real downside to getting spikes for a battling creature. Even gen 1 Pokemon just get spikier "for no reason" other than protection or intimidation, look at Nidoking, or Gengar, or Seadra. Hell, half of gen 1 Pokemon get extra spikes on their head or somewhere when they evolve, just go look. You only notice in more on Garchomp because they're a different color from its body, or rather the color of its claws and fangs.
I don't see how its any more blended than most starter lines. Yes, it tries hard to look fierce, just like Nidoking, or Gyarados, or Scyther, or Houndoom. Nothing inherently wrong with that.
Event legendaries as a whole. (I don't hate the mons, just the concept) and Smoocum.
