Why do people praise the physical/special move split when it ruined the balance of the game and undermined a ton of defensive pokemon who owed their viability to the fact that none their type weaknesses aligned with their stronger defensive stat?

I'd be willing to concede that the classification of some of the types themselves is poor, like special dark and physical ghost, but the larger system of type determining attacking and defending stat was superior for the games in terms of balance and gameplay.
