Gengar is the Shadow pokémon (Jap name: Gangar, from Doppelganger), it has this shape because it's supposed to:
1- Looks like Clefable shape (it's Clefable shadow)
2- Has the face of the cat from Alice in Wonderland
It has a solid lore, this thing of Haunter Vs Gengar is very old, personally I still prefer Gengar because in my country I had very few friends that played pokémon, so I really wanted a Gengar (and Golem) at the time but couldn't. This made me admire Gengar more.Today Golurk is my No.1 Ghost-type, though.

I don't think there is a single ghost type I don't like. My favourite line though is Pumpkaboo/Gourgeist - I have a giant shiny Gourgeist that I use. Shadowforce was MADE for shiny Gourgeist, and it just so happens to wreck everything in it's path.
Also, I am collecting all the ghost types as shiny, slowly.
