Sure it can fire off strong Psychics, but Tauros can make Mew eat dust with the one-two that was Body Slam + Hyper Beam.
About the Gen II, most of the physical attackers lacked Speed or Power, or just didn't have good movepools. Tauros was still used in Gen II but it wasn't the same.

The only relevant Slash user was Persian because it was faster by 5 points than Tauros, and also had Screech that allowed to scare opponents about the following Hyperbeam. Access to both Bubblebeam and Blizzard helped it too to take care about Golem or Rhydon.
The others Slash users were Scyther (105 Speed, UnSTAB, access to Swords Dance to play with HyperBeam) but Scyther hadn't a way to work around Rhydon or Golem, was scared by every Electric Type and Lapras or Articuno were Bulky Enough to tank any hit and retaliate. Charizard... Heh. Slower, weaker, at least it had Fire Blast and Dig I guess. Others were Sandslash, slow as fuck but with Earthquake and Rock Slide, and finally, fucking Pinsir. Literally nobody used Pinsir in Gen I.
Tauros was the most consistent Pokémon in Gen I and you were handicapping yourself for not using it. You can throw Tauros in the team and it'll work.
