Not really. You want to do a monotype run, that's part of the bargain. You'll never have a well-balanced team, so you'll have to grind more than usual.

I've noticed that this part of the game is the real bottleneck for most players. Forget Whitney, if you don't have the right combination of Pokemon to beat your rival, you're utterly trapped, as there's nothing to do to progress except meticulously, unreasonably grind against wild pokes. Go with Water Absorb Wooper definitely

I don't know if a water absorb Wooper would make a difference because his Croconaw can one-hit the Wooper I already have with Bite as well so I'd still have to do a ton of grinding...I should probably just grind the one I already have. Or I could just restart and pick Totodile so my rival picks Cyndaquil and then it will be easy for Geodude to take it out. I only have about two and a half hours played so it would be inconvenient to restart but it wouldn't be THAT bad...
