How in the hell do people complete the pokedex in later gen games? I've been told to just scower the GTS and trade with a bunch of passerbys but all that's gotten me are loads of children that just want to show off their hacked legendaries. And I can't even use the pokemon bank because I fell on hard times and had to sell most of my pokemon game collection to afford the ones I have.

You can't trust in passerbys, is rare that they will give the pokémon that you need. The Deposit option in the GTS is very effective if you know how to use, but if you want to complete the dex, instead of trade all your current mons for another bunch of current mons, you need to adquire new quantities of mons, with that I mean make your number increase, for this you need to learn some tricks in the GTS, here's how I did it (I posted it some days ago):
Just deposit a popular pokémon in the GTS and wait for a few hours or a day. I got many legendaries and others commons that way.
My main tactic was trading Gallades, I just had to catch Kirlias in a Safari Zone (Y), and play the specific Super Training that could drop Dawn Stones. You can see here: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Super_Training
In 3~7 tries generally I could get a stone, but if I really wanted to get a certain legendary/trade evolution/rare monster, I would get 2 stones, the first one I would use to evolve Kirlia, and the second one I would make the Gallade hold, so this would make the trade be even more faster.
If you want to get a trade evolution mon that requires a item, just get the first stage (for example, Porygon) and make it hold Up-grade, then deposit it asking for Porygon2 (believe or not, it WILL be traded), then deposit your Porygon2 holding Dubious disc, and wait for your Porygon-Z.
You just need to learn how GTS, it's the best way to fill the dex nowdays without having all the games.

This, knowing how to suck up to the GTS is very useful for filling the dex.
Catch all the Pokemon available in your region first to get them out of the way.
Open notepad and make a list of all the Pokemon you don't have yet. Work on getting 5-10 new Pokemon a day at least. When you get a Pokemon, remove it from the list. This will help you keep track of what you need to get and gives you an idea of what to ask for in the GTS.
Use tumblr to find Pokemon giveaways. A lot of blogs are devoted to handing out legendaries, shinies, later-stage evolutions, and dex-fillers. They usually ask for male shitmons from early routes (as female pokemon sometimes don't show up in the GTS).
Finally, Wonder Trade. People complain about endless shitmons but if you're lucky and/or persistent it will help you with your dex. Catch or breed a ton of something okay that you'd be cool with getting yourself and hammer those fuckers into the WT.

Why do people never realize that the GTS works both ways? Don't just look for people that have posted what you want. Instead, deposit something for trade and ask for what you need. If it's any sort of reasonable trade, it will be taken quickly. That's why the GTS looks so shitty - because it's only the lousy trades that stay on there for more than a little while.
