Using your favorite pokemon is the best. And this is true if you're talking about playing the game, beating the gym leaders and the bad guys, reaching the E4 and defeating the champion or if you're trying to beat smogonfags and their overpowered OU compos with your shitmons or if you're autistically inserting into the game as if it was real and you're the protag going against everything with your bros.
You could use Garchomp and company every single time because he's strong even if you hate seeing his blue back while your favorite ones are on the PC dusting. But if you're skilled enough you can try and use the ones you like and still win (maybe once every 1000 battles against smogonfags but then again if your favorite ones are so shit you should drop OU and go to RU or NU)

What she says is true in regards to the anime and would also be true in real life if Pokemon existed, but due to the nature of video games it isn't true in the games sadly, due to all these stats and shit.
However, as we've seen in the anime, the power gap between normal pokemon and legendaries grows even more fucking huge without video gamey stuff like stats in place to somewhat control it. Trying to go up against the likes of Groudon or Dialga with your team in real life would end horribly for you.
