The egg isn't guaranteed to be shiny and the game doesn't directly hand you the shiny Fagfish as you still have to catch it rather than KO it. Gen 5 has the shiny Haxorus in the Nature Preserve and Benga LITERALLY hands you a shiny Gible or shiny Dratini for beating him so if you're going to be a fag and try that shit at least use your fucking head about it. Getting shinies in gen 6 is still easier than catching the LoR Fagfish or beating Benga.

It works very well. Faster than the radar in D/P/Pt, but on the other hand in D/P/Pt I generally got multiples per chain. Its far faster than breeding or the friend safari, although the safari and breeding both have better chances at high IV mons.
Plus the fishing only has roughly 3 pokes per rod, so theres a good chance to get what you want.
