Create an unsecured hotspot named "McDonalds Free WiFi" (no quotations)
Remove all connections from 3ds, add this one.
Go through Mystery Gift as normal.
You can't connect to the internet because you need to go to McDonalds site to give permission, which you need the internet for. Not sure how to get the 3ds working on their wifi.
Had to do this because despite having the toys, Canadian McDonalds doesn't have the event set up.

There's literally no set up. Your 3DS auto connects to their WiFi since they are a registered Nintendo Zone. If you try to manual set up, it doesn't even work.

its not that they are a "registered nintendo zone" its jsut that nintendo is checking the SSID the 3ds is using to connect with because it woudl take minutes more for the store manager to call NOA up and say "hey, we did the thing here is its MAC"

sadly no, from what i have seen an iphone's hotspot requires a key every time it is set up, it cannot be set up as an open access point, that would be too insecure for apple's liking.

I used to have some trouble too. When I was playing AC:New Leaf and tried to get a special gift from the Nin zone, no luck. But Hoopa was no problem for me. I just go to the conn. settings, scan for McDs Wi-Fi and did the test. Then of course I got a mystery gift via internet.
Also note I went after the lunch rush, not that many patrons.
