You can't be much of a pokemon master if you don't catch and battle more types of pokemon. Ash has a very limited knowledge of different pokemon and how to battle them. If he wants to be a master he should find an area to focus in. In Ash's case I would say he should focus on being a battle master and try to train up so her can win as many battles as possible.

Well it depends on your style of training. Ash seems to be more battle heavy and worried about his win count rather than catching more pokemon. Ash is loading his team with level rather than having different pokemon for different needs.
Personally I am in the camp of having 12 pokemon of near equal level and skill but differing variety. Then in the post game I use my lower levels and do everything again.
I imagine trainers would spend a couple of battles getting to know their pokemon and when new games (new regions in the anime) come out I start with a fresh team.

Ash doesn't care about leveling. He catches the types he wants and battles with them to understand them. He's gone through entire regions with starters that never evolve. Having companions sort of cripples him regarding catching pokemon, though, since he won't usually catch a certain type if one of his friends already has it or wants it.
