Both Devil Survivor games were among the best titles on the DS. Definitely worth giving a try. Just like all SMT titles, actually.I'd even say that there's no Pokemon game better than any DeSu.
I'm also not gonna lie aesthetically this game just looks pleasing but I've never played a tactical rpg before

They're not as easy as Pokemon games, but the difficulty curve is pretty good with early stuff being easily manageable by total laymen and the end-game being somewhat challenging, depending on your playstyle.
The first game has really great atmosphere and nice plot to boot. The sequel is slightly worse in that regard, but has better gameplay, better cast and greater variety of demons.

I disagree about the difficulty curve, at least for the first game. It's fairly difficult up until the last day where the levels progressively spike higher to the point it's hard to keep up even with doing free battles. Like it's best to get the shitty/ easier ending first so that on replays you can disable the EXP decay when you defeat a lower level enemy.
Some people think the second one is harder, but I think it has a much more stable difficulty progression but overall the second game plays better anyway.
The first one has a more interesting story though, so I would say play the first one at least because the plot is more straightforward but still good.

I remember playing the first game all those years ago and indeed it was rather difficult at the end, but like I said, it's mainly about your playstyle. First DeSu was really unfriendly for phys builds and bad choices thorough the game would really affect the last few battles (MC's build, team line-up, since not used characters did not level up and the way one fused demons), so I'm not surprised some would go for the easy way out with the bad end. Still, it was really fucking satisfying to beat it using strategy instead of raw power like in SOME RPGS.

Physical build is still easy as soon as you get Multi-hit then Multi-strike, and there's always Holy Strike for phys-repelling assholes. But a full magic build is more consistent for damage, Holy Dance and Drain make the game a joke anyway. But because going full phys invalidates Atsuro, it's better to go magic. No other magic-oriented character can be as optimized as MC.

SMT: Strange Journey is one of the best games I've played. Highly recommended. Might consider it more similar to pokemon than devil survivor due to random encounters. But as a whole neither plays that similarly to pokemon.

I have zero attachment to the SMT demons because of this mechanic. They've got cool designs but after playing so many you already know which ones will probably be early/mid/end-game demons. Dragon Quest Joker has this replace mechanic too and I didn't like it that much.

For this reason I can't take any posts that compare Pokemon to SMT seriously, not only are the battle mechanics not similar at all but the overall tone of the game plus your relationship with the monsters is completely different.
By the way OP, Devil Survivor OC, while being weeb incarnate, is a really good game, so definitely pick it up if you haven't yet.

But... Nocturne literally has (some) demons evolve into stronger ones, and Persona's... er, Personas, while they dont evolve, do continuously level up and can be made extremely powerful.
Nocturne also has a mechanic where if you save the very first demon youre able to get, even if you fused her into something else, she will go away and come back as an uber-pixie with max stats and a host of the strongest moves in the game.
The Devil Summoner and Survivor series' though... ugh I hate that shit.

Just beat DeSu overclocked last week. Damn, that last day was painfully difficult and grindy.
Moved on to Soul Hackers now. At 11 hours in I'm having a great time. I thought the first person dungeon crawling and other old school features would be turnoffs but they're actually cool.
